(KBIT) Killed Before Its Time / Hennessy

In our latest edition of KBIT we mourn the loss of an idea so vibrant and full of life that it is difficult to keep the tears from our eyes. We were asked by the wonderful agency Sub Rosa to “visualize flavor” to promote the new Hennessy mixer flavors featured at the events. They are now our brothers in mourning.

This pitch had an incredibly bright future – as always seems the case with lives cut short. She had hopes of being projected on installation walls of Hennessy “Artistry” events around the world. Flavored light. Dan Flavin-inspired neon fruit sculptures. No one knew Lemon/Lime could look like that.

But before the pitch could ever bring light into the lives of event-goers everywhere, she was tragically torn from this world by an inebriated voice (too much Hennessy, perhaps?) on the other end of the phone…A devastating car accident leaves only a the memory of what could have been.

Dear pitch, we will never forget.

(KBIT) Killed Before Its Time / MSN.ca

Ok. You get KBIT by now. Stuff that’s dead and in need of resurrection. At this point, we can use more time to dive into the deceased, mourn its death, craft the obituary. So, a few kind words, by those team members closest to the work, should offer some insights into a budding life ended all too soon.

KBIT: Hi David… Love your work btw… So… When was the last time you remember seeing these boards… and what would you tell them if they were still around today?

DS: I guess I would say that your death was tragic. You were ripped from our lives prematurely. We loved you for your super-lo-fi approach, your abstract vision of the iconic MSN butterfly, your use of restrained CG, for your ability NOT to do a camera fly-through. Yes, you were unique.

KBIT: I really like the idea behind the construction of the brand mark from the many different physical elements in the earlier frames. It must be difficult to see so many lovely design elements, with bright futures in animation, get taken away from you at such an early age? How you do persevere?

DS: Their memory lives on in the minds of our team, our production company and the agency (Taxi, Montreal). Perhaps our collective memory will resurrect the idea and it will be reincarnated in another form, another brand, another campaign. Inshallah. Kudos to Umeric.

MSN.ca we will miss you. R.I.P. 2009.

(KBIT) Killed Before Its Time / Nike

Welcome to the first installment of, KBIT, Killed Before Its Time. If you have spent any time in the creative world, you know ideas are media and ideas are currency. But as strong as design ideas can be, they often meet an untimely death. Like the dull thud of taxi hitting bike messenger, the idea you’ve been building can suddenly die – whether by the client’s axe or some unseen force in the wacky world of advertising.

So without further adieu, we present to you our first installment of KBIT. Why? To prove that there’s life after death, to give things that should have succeeded another chance. Or, just to show the world all the goodies quietly sitting on our servers.

We begin with a resurrected pair of style frames for Nike. They were to become a piece in motion demonstrating the cross-training capabilities of these kicks. Designer: Graham Hill.

Frame One was brutally murdered, during a divine act of selflessness by stepping in front of his friend Frame Two, pictured below.

Note: The (.jpg) file names have been changed at the family’s request.
